It is in the charming village of Neuvicq-le-Château that this historic monument from the 15th century, in flamboyant Gothic style, stands proudly. Built on the site of a fortified building from the 12th century by the Larochandrie family, it was then the successive property of several nobles including, in the 17th century, the Marquis de Montespan.

The castle of Neuvicq-le-Château is a historic monument.

Threatened with destruction in 1904 by its owner, Mr. Clais, this castle was bought the same year by the town thanks to the tenacity of the mayor of the time, Mr. Porchaire, who succeeded during a stormy session, in convincing the municipal council of the necessity of such an investment. This building was then classified as a Historic Monument by decree of September 14, 1912.

The Neuvicq-le-Château castle is part of the Historic Route of the Treasures of Charentes.

The Historic Route of the Treasures of Charentes, (formerly the Historic Route of the Treasures of Saintonge and Aunis which was created in 1977), aims to raise awareness among visitors to Charente-Maritime of the architectural riches and diversity of cultural styles in this part of the department.
Many sites – private castles, public monuments, military fortresses, religious buildings, Romanesque art, museums – form an unprecedented choice of visit themes in a restricted area.
